Citing Images and Tables

Citing Images and Tables

• If a figure or table that you are using has been previously published, you must acknowledge the original source.

• Include the acknowledgement of a source below each figure or table in the footnote (caption) section, then place a reference number in parentheses corresponding to your reference list entry. The reference list entry will contain the information for locating the original source of the table or figure.

Please note the following copyright guidelines for reproducing figures or tables:

  • Students submitting assignments generally don't need to obtain permission to reproduce a figure or table in their work, as long as the original source is acknowledged and the work is not posted online or shared outside Murdoch University in any way.

  • Anyone writing for publication will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owner to include the figure or table in the work. This includes theses as they are published on the University Research Portal, a publicly accessible platform.

  • Specific wording in the acknowledgement of the original source may be required by the copyright holder or Creative Commons license.
  • For more information, see Copyright advice.

• Number each Figure or Table consecutively in order of first appearance in your paper e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3; Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, etc. Capitalise and do not abbreviate the word Figure or Table.

Use the Figure or Table and number when citing in the text e.g. Figure 1, Table 1, etc. Use Arabic numbers only, e.g. convert V or Five to 5.

Insert Figures and Tables as close to the relevant text as possible.

Tables and Figures have a concise title placed above them. The table or figure number is part of the title. Capitalise the major words in the title. There is no full stop at the end of a title.

Table titles must be concise, with enough information for readers to understand the contents of the table.

• Include a short footnote beneath each Table or Figure to include any explanatory details if necessary.

• Further information can be found in Chapter 4 of the AMA Manual of Style.
