EndNote 21 guide

Use EndNote Online

How to use the EndNote reference management software

What is EndNote Online?

EndNote Online is a cloud-based version of EndNote that can be used alongside (not instead of) EndNote desktop. You can use EndNote Online to sync your EndNote library between computers. This can be useful when you work with multiple computers that have EndNote downloaded, or if you need to access your references on a computer that does not have EndNote.

EndNote Online also allows you to share or work collaboratively with others:

What is the difference between EndNote Online and EndNote Web?

In addition to EndNote Online, there is also a web-only interface for EndNote 21 called EndNote Web. As EndNote Web does not yet have the full range of sharing or advanced syncing features found in EndNote Online, we recommend using EndNote Online until EndNote Web is more fully developed. If you are unsure whether you are using EndNote Online or EndNote Web, check the URL:

  • EndNote Online can be found at https://www.myendnoteweb.com/
  • EndNote Web can be found at https://web.endnote.com/

Set up EndNote Online

  1. In EndNote, select "Sync Configuration" from the top of the left-hand-side menu.
  2. Select "Sync now". This will open the "EndNote Login" pop-up window
  3. Select "Sign up"
  4. Enter your Murdoch email address and a password
  5. Select "OK"
  6. Enter your details using your Murdoch University email address, then click “Register”
  7. Go to your Murdoch email to confirm your registration.

Sync your EndNote library

To sync your EndNote library to your EndNote Online account:

  1. In EndNote desktop, select "Sync Status" from the top of the left-hand-side menu. The "Sync Status" button will only appear once you have set up your EndNote Online account.
  2. You may receive a message suggesting you should create a compressed library backup. Select "Yes", then select a location on your hard drive to save the backup
  3. Select "Sync Now".

Set up automatic syncing

  • In EndNote Desktop, select "Edit" from the top menu
  • Select "Preferences"
  • In the Preference menu, select "Sync"
  • Enter the email address and password associated with your EndNote Online account
  • Make sure the "Sync automatically" check box is ticked
  • Click "OK".

Any changes you make to references will now sync between EndNote desktop and EndNote Online at 15 minute intervals.
