Downloading Output Styles

Output styles determine the appearance of references in a bibliography. EndNote has over 4,500 output styles, around 500 of which are supplied with the software. If you haven’t found the style you need, you can download the complete set or choose individual styles from the EndNote Output styles website.

To download a style and add it to EndNote:

  • Search for the style you require in the search box and click Search.
  • Click Download and then open the file you have downloaded. This will open the style in EndNote.
  • In EndNote go to File > Save As... Remove the word 'copy' and click Save, then click File > Close Style.

To locate your downloaded style in EndNote:

  • Click on the down arrow below Tools > Output Styles > Open Style Manager..
  • Scroll through the list to find your style. Check the box of the style you want and cancel out of the box
  • The style should now be available within your output styles

  • If you have trouble downloading a style, try a different browser.
  • You must save the style files in the correct folder where your copy of EndNote has been installed.

A note on Australian Output Styles

Australian Output Styles site contains bibliographic styles for several Australian journals that you would need to conform to for your article or manuscript submission if you want to publish in that journal. Although some of these styles are found on EndNote.com, not all of them are.

General EndNote Troubleshooting

Please consider the following general advice and troubleshooting tips when using EndNote:

  • Are there {Curly brackets} in your Word document? EndNote sees these as part of the formatting code. If you must use curly brackets to show equations, you can find instructions for circumventing this problem on the EndNote website here.
  • Do you have Track Changes turned on? Track changes does not play well with live EndNote code. You can find instructions for managing this on the EndNote website here.
  • You may need to update your version to get bug fixes.
  • Recovery of a corrupted document and/or library may not always be possible and should be avoided at all costs. Back up your library regularly to avoid losing you references.

EndNote tab missing from Word?

  • This can happen if you’ve installed (or sometimes updated) Microsoft Word after you have installed EndNote.
  • All possible fixes can be found on the EndNote website here.

Lost access to a shared library or shared group?

  • Check with the library owner about your access

Error message: ‘This library is being used by someone else. Try opening it again later

  • Most likely with shared libraries when they are in the process of being updated.
  • If you see this message with a library that is not shared, you may need to create a new local library on your computer (from the copy in EndNote Online) and then try to synchronise again.

Too many libraries? Merge libraries and make life easier

  • Save a back-up copy of each library
  • Choose which library to make the master working library (or create a new one) and Open this library
  • File > Import choose the EndNote library to import
  • Set EndNote Library as the selected file import option
  • Decide what to do with duplicates, click Import
  • Repeat with other libraries as necessary
  • Create a back-up copy of your new master library
  • Sync with EndNote online

Journal title abbreviations (Vancouver style)

The Vancouver style requires the use of specific journal title abbreviations. EndNote refers to these as ‘term lists’, which need to be added separately.

To upload a terms list:

  • Go to Library > Open Term Lists > Journal Terms List
  • If there are existing terms, select all the existing terms (use Ctrl+A), and click Delete Term
  • Switch to the Lists tab and click Import List…
  • Double-click the ‘Medical’ file.
  • This will begin the import. Click OK when done
  • You should now see all the journal abbreviations in the term list.
