EndNote 21 Guide

Getting Started

How to use EndNote 21 reference management software

Create a new library

To create an EndNote library:

  • Click File > New
  • Navigate to the location where you will save your library (the best place is your Documents file)

Note: Do not save it on to a USB drive or in a cloud drive such as Dropbox or iCloud – these are fine to store backups but not working libraries

  • Give your library a unique name (i.e. not the default My EndNote Library) and click Save.

This will create two files with the same name:

  • A library file (.enl)
  • A folder of data files (.data).

Both files need to be in the same location for EndNote to work correctly.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you keep all your references together in one EndNote library, rather than create multiple libraries. This will avoid problems when writing papers or moving files between computers.

Selecting your referencing style

To select your required referencing style:

  • Select the appropriate style in the toolbar under Tools > Output Styles
  • If the style you need is not available, click ‘Open Style Manager…’
    • Select the style you want to add
    • Click Choose.

Once you have added a reference, you can double-check the referencing style by looking in the Preview section of the Summary tab on the Reference panel.

To see a preview of the reference in that style:

  • Click on the Reference
  • Select ‘Summary’ in the panel on the right. The Reference preview will display on the bottom right in the display pane.
  • Tip: if you cannot see the preview: the display pane is configured like a table. Click on the line at the bottom and slide it up so you can see the preview section or click on the small arrow in the right bottom corner if the reference preview is not visible.

You can see how the reference would look in a document, using the referencing style of your choice.

Output styles determine the appearance of references in a bibliography. EndNote has over 4,500 output styles, around 500 of which are supplied with the software. If you haven’t found the style you need, you can download the complete set or choose individual styles from the EndNote Output styles website.

To download a style and add it to EndNote:

  • Search for the style you require in the search box and click Search.
  • Click Download and then open the file you have downloaded. This will open the style in EndNote.
  • In EndNote go to File > Save As... Remove the word 'copy' and click Save, then click File > Close Style.

To locate your downloaded style in EndNote:

  • Click on the down arrow below Tools > Output Styles > Open Style Manager..
  • Scroll through the list to find your style. Check the box of the style you want and cancel out of the box
  • The style should now be available within your output styles

A note on Australian Output Styles

Australian Output Styles site contains bibliographic styles for several Australian journals that you would need to conform to for your article or manuscript submission if you want to publish in that journal. Although some of these styles are found on EndNote.com, not all of them are.
